What is the SAT?

The SAT is a fully digital test by the College Board that lasts just over 2 hours. It is used in university admissions as an academic aptitude indicator. It is comprised of two English sections followed by two Math sections, with a total final score out of 1600. It is primarily a multiple choice test, with some questions in the Math sections requiring students to input a numerical answer. To maximise their scores, students should be doing diligent, purposeful preparation.

We advise that students sit the test for the first time in either Year 11 or 12 (10th or 11th Grade). December 2024 is also a final SAT test date for Year 13 students before most university application deadlines. The test is conducted at an approved local test center (often a school).

Is the SAT important?

In a nutshell, it is indeed important for many students. In the US, many universities have become 'SAT optional' since COVID struck in 2020. However, there is no doubt that a strong SAT score can still strengthen a student's overall application profile, boosting their academic credentials. This is especially relevant given declining acceptance rates at top universities every year, with greater competition for limited places. More and more top universities in the US are also now bringing back the SAT requirement. Therefore, students are well advised to prepare diligently and sit for the SAT if they are serious about gaining admission to a top US university. Moreover, many top universities outside the US, including in Canada and Europe, also use the SAT as a key admissions test - so students applying there can additionally leverage their SAT scores for these applications.
